After their father charmingly runs off with the family fortune and a man called Brian, Ben and Jenny move from Manhattan to a flyspeck town in New England with their mother, Susanne. The town is characterised by three things: a history of witchcraft and religious slaughter, a slew of missing children, and a population of freakish teens.
Local legend has it that Nathaniel Butcher, a fervid puritan, cleansed the town of witches in the eighteenth century, in a frenzied orgy of killing, murdering all the women and children. He then moved his family into the old house. One night, he gathered the twelve Puritan leaders of the community for a meeting, and they were never seen again. The story goes that whoever moves into the old house loses their children, who are never seen again.
The local boys, naturally, are fascinated by this gory legend, and despite being forbidden to go anywhere near the house, take Ben there as a welcome to the neighbourhood rite of passage. The house, living up to its billing, is horrifying. The boys hear mysterious footsteps, the awful moans and cries of children, and see ghostly faces at the windows.
Several of the boys each venture up to the house, wanting to solve the mystery behind the legend; only to go missing and reappear as ghostly figures, decapitated corpses and even being dismembered by the butcher himself. On one such trip Mouse manages to get away, running for his life. He finds Ben and Johnny, and they mount a rescue party for Billy.
With great resourcefulness and courage, they manage to kill the butcher and escape. But the moment they think they are safe, they find themselves face to face with the Butcher’s accomplice, the most unexpected person of all, and finally find out the horrifying truth of what happened in that blasted town three hundred years ago.
