Synopsis:
The movie starts off by telling you just how many kidnappings occur in Latin America...and that 70% of them end up in the death of the kidnapped victim.
Denzel Washington (The Bonecollector, Remember The Titans) plays John Creasy, a former United States operative that has leaned less on the Bible and more on the bottle to get through life.
John meets up with an old friend of his played by Christopher Walken (Suicide Kings, The Prophecy)who moved to Mexico and has sworn off his killing ways of the past. He talks John into trying out becoming a bodyguard. John first declines because of his drinking problem but is persuaded by the idea he should just do his best if the person he were guarding were kidnapped.
Ramos, a wealthy Mexican man living in Mexico City is adviced by his lawyer, played by Mickey Rourke, to hire a bodyguard as he cannot get a kidnapping policy unless his child has a bodyguard. He tells him to hire a decent bodyguard that won't cost too much, just enough to get kidnapping insurance.
Ramos takes Creasy to meet with his wife, a white American, to see if she will approve of him to guard their daughter Pita played by Dakota Fanning (I am Sam, Cat in the Hat, Uptown Girls, Speilberg's Taken, etc..). Creasy is quickly made her bodyguard.
At first Creasy shows little interest in befriending Pita because of his job of guarding her but he slowly gives into her. She begins to show him that it's okay to live again and after a close call or two, he decides to lean more on the Bible again and to not rely on alcohol. The job that started as getting paid to try and protect a young girl became an obsession to protect her with his own life.
During a successful kidnapping attempt, John lay very close to death after killing two Judicial Police officers. In the hospital, Creasy is declared under arrest for the slayings of the two police officers while a reporter played by Rachel Tocotin (Ernest Goes To Camp) believes that the two police officers were from the corrupt group of police officers that allow the kidnappings if not actually participate in them.
During a ransom attempt the people sent by the kidnappers to pick up the money are killed (which includes the kidnapper's nephew) and the money is taken. It is reported that because the ambush occured and his nephew was killed, that Pita would also be killed.
With the help of the reporter an a special inspector with the Mexican government, Creasy goes on a vengeance-filled warpath in which everyone that had anything to do with the kidnapping and reported death of Pita.
Creasy discovers just how many people cash in on the kidnappings that occur throughout the country and begins to torture those involved for information before killing them.
How many people are in on the kidnappings? Who is behind them? Who allows them to happen? Who benefits from them? Whom is dead and whom is alive when it's all said and done?
To tell anything else would give it all away.
