The Godfather won the Academy Award for screenplay based from previous material, actor, and picture. Nominated for costume design, editing, original score, sound, supporting actor, supporting actor, supporting actor, and director. Winner of the American Film Institute’s top one hundred movies of all time: number three. Arguably one of the greatest American films ever made. Based on the best selling novel by Mario Puzo, this story chronicles the life of a New York Mafia family and shows the problems that occur at the introduction of drugs into the world of organized crime. It shows the fall of a powerful crime boss and the birth of another to step into his shoes. Another Oscar refusal; this one coming from Marlon Brando. He would not accept the award in protest of Hollywood's discrimination against Native Americans. This announcement was made by a woman made up in Indian dress when Brando's name was called. Also interesting: the horse head that was left between the sheets was actually a real severed horse head. Wonder what PETA has to say about that?
