Nominated for the Academy Award for art direction/set decoration, cinematography, editing, song, director, supporting actor, and picture. In the final segment of the Godfather series, Michael Corleone works to get himself and his family out of the violent underworld of organized crime. The project is occasionally considered to be a cash-in as it was released during a time when Zoetrope Studios was in some financial trouble (after a poor financial turnout for Tucker: A Man and His Dream).
But the film unjustly receives poor criticism. It’s a strong story with incredible performances and brilliant direction. Certainly not the best of the trio, but all in all fitting end to a wonderful trilogy. Two years later, a Godfather trilogy was released that had all three movies edited into one 583 minute marathon. The package had all three movies edited into chronological order and included some previously unreleased footage.
