American Wedding, which is the third is hopefully final edition of the series, isn’t really that bad. It is the type of movie that makes critics shake their heads in disgust, but viewers who enjoyed the first two will probably walk away pleased. That is quite an accomplishment given the difficulty sequels face in maintaining their audience. This has proven especially true for the comedy genre, given the disaster Scary Movie 2 proved to be.
This movie should be considered a success not only for that reason, but also for the reduction in cast this series has sustained as it progressed. Sure Jim (Jason Biggs) and the foul-mouthed Stiffler (Seann William Scott) are two of this series most popular characters, but Tara Reid, Shannon Elizabeth, Chris Klein, and Mena Suvari are all absent from American Wedding. Despite this, the remaining group of characters produces a valiant effort to keep this third offering from losing respectability.
American Wedding sets the stage for Jim and Michelle’s wedding, whom viewers have known from their high school days. As would be expected, very little goes as planned, clearing the way for disgusting gags that have become American Pie’s trademark. Although I did find Stiffler’s character a little tiring this time around, the movie did have enough humor it keep it interesting.
When I first heard they were making a sequel to the original American Pie, I was skeptical. In retrospect, they have produced two respectable sequels, and although this film is not a work of art, it is certainly worthy of a viewing.
