Best way to summarize Director Eli Roth's "Hostel" - freakin' gross. Definitely do not watch the movie on a full stomach. The story line is basic enough - three less than brilliant college guys backpack across Europe in search for the ultimate high and ultimate orgy. They end up in Slovakia, and learn the hard way that their quest for the ultimate has an extremely high price. Three go into Slovakia, but only one will be fortunate enough to escape "in one piece". OK, that is as close to a spoiler as I'll give.
I don't think the movie was particularly clever. It was also rather predictable. But its appeal, if you can call it that, is the raw violence that is becoming a sub-genre of horror as seen in other films like "Saw". Although raw, the movies can only be judged by their tense effects. And Hostel was certainly full of tense effects. So although not an "intelligent" movie, it still earns five stars.
Its worth a Netflix rental.... |
